Bhubaneswar's IT scene is smaller than Bengaluru's or Hyderabad's, but it's growing fast — freshers get real responsibility sooner, and the commute is nothing. The list below spans IT services, fintech, healthtech, deep-tech and edtech, not just early-stage startups.
Backed by the Odisha IT Policy 2025 and the Startup Odisha scheme, the city hosts IT parks like Infocity SEZ and Info Valley, where TCS, Infosys, Tech Mahindra and Deloitte run centres. A genuine product-startup scene has taken root alongside them — Bhubaneswar ranks around #18 among Indian startup cities.
Fresher CTC here typically runs ₹2.5–8 LPA — lower than metro product companies, but with shorter commutes, faster ownership, and direct client contact even as a fresher.

Most drives cover the 2024, 2025 and 2026 batches — check per company. Education gaps above 1–2 years are usually flagged during background verification.

A single GATE score opens more doors than people realise — NIC, DRDO, ONGC and 30-odd PSUs all recruit off the same exam.
GATE is the master key. A valid GATE (CS) score opens doors to NIC, DRDO, BARC, IOCL, ONGC, GAIL, BEL, and 30+ other PSUs. Your score stays valid for 3 years from the result date.
GATE for CS (paper code: CS) is 100 marks over 65 questions in 3 hours. General Aptitude is 15% of the paper, the rest is core CS. MCQs carry 1/3 negative marking; MSQ and NAT questions don't. Notification is expected in July 2026, registration closes around September, and the exam runs in February 2027.

A Codeforces or LeetCode rating gets noticed before your CGPA does — some of these contests hire straight from the leaderboard.
A Codeforces rating of 1600+ or a LeetCode rating of 1800+ meaningfully boosts your off-campus profile. Adobe Codiva and Google Big Code have directly led to job offers for students in past editions — these aren't just resume lines.

The fastest way into a good company is often through its internship — a lot of these convert to full-time offers without another round of interviews.
The PPO route is the most reliable path to a high-paying job. Companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Adobe heavily hire from their intern pool — an offer from a summer internship skips every screening round. Apply during August–October for the following summer.

What actually improves your intern chances
A strong GitHub (5+ projects with real READMEs), Codeforces 1400+ or LeetCode 300+, and a one-page resume with numbers — "reduced API response time by 40%" beats "worked on backend." Referrals matter more than most people think: one message to a senior who interned somewhere can skip the OA entirely. Apply in August–October for summer roles; waiting until November means most seats are gone.
Bookmark four or five of these and check them daily — opportunities here close in 2–5 days, so passive browsing won't get you far.

Build the foundation first (months 1–4)
Complete Striver's A2Z DSA Sheet (450+ problems). Solve 150+ LeetCode problems across difficulty levels — don't skip the mediums. Pick one language and know it well, Java or C++. Keep your GitHub active with 3+ visible projects that have real README files.
Most people fail the OA not on coding but on aptitude and verbal sections. Most drives start with a 2–3 hour assessment: aptitude, logical reasoning, and 2–3 coding questions. Prepare all three — PrepInsta and IndiaBIX have company-specific sets.

August to December is peak season
About 80% of off-campus drives open in this window. Apply to at least 20–30 companies, not just your dream companies. Track everything in a spreadsheet. Join Telegram channels that post daily alerts — drives close in 48 hours sometimes.

Mock interviews, not just solo practice
Pramp and Interviewing.io connect you with real partners. Revise OS, DBMS, CN, OOPs. Be ready to explain your projects fully — what you built, why, how it works, what you'd do differently.

GATE is a parallel track, not a backup
Start from Year 3 if this route interests you. A score above 650 opens NIC, DRDO, IOCL, ONGC and BARC simultaneously. NPTEL lectures + PYQs is the standard approach that works.

Keep competing
SIH, TCS CodeVita, HackWithInfy, and one Codeforces/LeetCode contest per week. Even reaching SIH finals is worth a resume line. Contest ratings are strong differentiators when your degree and CGPA look identical to hundreds of other applicants.
